Hello,
I have access to a dead MCI Multitrack tape machine (JH24). Are any part in the beast worth keeping for future DIY project ? I'll keep the VU meter, maybee the transformer ?

Thanks for your advices !

enough spare parts on the machine, would be worth it to get it working again... that is of course, if you know whats really wrong with it. they sound pretty good, are not smooth to punch in on and alignment can go dodgy by putting the card cage back in but hey they sound good.

They do sound good , but on an old MCI, there is a problem with the Deck Plate warping if stored in a cold warehouse or garage(think 0 degrees and below).  The alignment on that machine references to a thick Flat metal Plate not a cast assembly like an Ampex or Studer.  If that plate is warped you will have a terrible time getting the rollers ,idlers and motors, capstan and heads to be perpendicular to the plate.  The tape will not track on the head right.    Just something to look at.  However, that said, I would see if I could get it running.  There are plenty of manuals around and some parts I'm sure.

Yellow topped JH's are the ones to avoid they are the warpies, also any JH-24 that has the red socketed opamps need to have their sockets replaced, the molex connectors need to be resoldered for reliability. Most have been done at this point.

My '87 Jeep runs smoothly and sounds great, recorded with it this evening.

Of course it was the last of the litter and they had worked most of the bugs out by then.

The beast died for multiple reason,

unused for years and stocked in a cold not dry place
rain on the machine
pieces are missing
cables are missing,...

Nadege,

Can you take a photo of one of the playback amp cards, or one of each type of audio cards, so we can see what version it is on your machine.

If it is one of the older versions, there are many good transformers and repro/line amplifiers that can be built many mike pre amps of.
BTW, these playback amps was a nearly exact copy of Ampex AG-440/MM-1100 playback amps.

The later versions were electronic balanced both on line inputs and outputs, including playback amp input that have LM-394 as front end transistors.
But also these can be useful as mike pre amps even if they are transformer less.
