In honor of all who served and didn't make it home.

In the spirit of the day I will make an observation about military service and politics.

While POTUS becomes the statutory commander in chief of all US military. President Clinton was the first president elected since FDR who wasn't a veteran. Since President Clinton only President George Bush is a veteran (both ex-President Bushes served).

Among today's crop of presidential candidates (from both parties), only Gov. DeSantis served in the military (Navy Lt Commander). I consider this a useful life experience for serving in the top leadership position. Of course this is not the only consideration, just one of several.

JR

PS: I had to switch back to google search to even find this information

John there have been a total of 14 presidents out all 46 that we had which did not do military service. I agree it is useful skillls to have.

  1. John Adams
  2. John Quincy Adams
  3. Martin Van Buren
  4. Grover Cleveland
  5. William H. Taft
  6. Woodrow Wilson
  7. Warren G. Harding
  8. Calvin Coolidge
  9. Herbert Hoover
  10. Franklin D. Roosevelt
  11. Bill Clinton
  12. Barack Obama
  13. Donald Trump
  14. Joe Biden

Can't forget that POTUS #1 was a General....

Leaders who have served in the military should have a different sensibility about starting wars and sending soldiers into harm's way.

Ive several times gone by car through Flanders and Normandy ,
Its big rolling fields , then every once in a while theres a cemetary ,
sometimes vast ,as far as the eye can see , other times smaller .

As a teenager , it certainly didnt add any sugar coating to the idea of taking a career in the military , in fact quite the opposite .

'Leaders who have served in the military should have a different sensibility about starting wars and sending soldiers into harm's way'

Sense of duty to country and religion can lead to its own form of blind faith ,
I notice in my dad to this day on certain issues he sill trys to rationalise blatant abuses by church and state , Its taken years to knock military thinking back in his decission making process ,
He's older ,mellower and wiser now and having grandchildern around is a bit like a second chance at parenthood later in life , I think he's had to seriously revise his disciplinary methods ,
then again hindsight should teach us lessons , if it doesnt history repeats itself .

WWII was supposed to be the war to end all wars, and the horror of mushroom clouds rising above Hiroshima and Nagasaki should be a suitable deterrent for all thinking people, but apparently isn't. President Eisenhower (former WWII General) warned about the "military industrial complex" who profit from endless warfare. There is still work to be done.

Eisenhowers speech about the MIC was indeed a very powerful warning , no less relevent now than it was then .
I also visited a war memorial in Moscow , they illicit just the same sombre ,contemplative headspace as the others Ive been too . War sets the poor on bothsides against each other for the enrichment of a few at the top .
