Art supply stores have really fine open weave mesh wire sheets that sculptors use for forms. Pearl and Charette have the stuff in brass, copper and silver. OTT, I'd try Mcmaster-carr.

McMaster-Carr is the source, just look for "woven wire cloth". You can buy 12" squares of just about any mesh size, in brass, bronze, etc. for $7-10. And shipping is reasonable, too.

I think Gus buys cheap mics and guts them, installing his own capsule and electronics. Maybe a used junker would save you some hassle.
