Just curious, does anybody remember or know more about the Spirit Protracker ?

Looks a convenient & decent box to keep the recordings going while own DIY-micpre's await an eventual finalization...
Application I had in mind is to have an easy portable recording setup, for instance together with a Roland VSR-880 or such.

Any idea what kind of mic-preamp it has ? Opamp plus a few discretes in front ? 2017 ?

Understood it's from 1995. Haven't seen one up for sale yet though, but better be prepared when one pops up !

Any opinions welcomed.

Thanks,

Peter

I almost got one off eBay once and got sniped. I have not seen one on eBay since then. I think the preamps are similair to the M series boards.

Thanks.

Must admit I'm not familiar with the M-boards, any idea what kind of mic-pre these use ?

Hmm, but since chances to find one are not that high...

Thanks,

Peter

Don't know about the Spirit Protracker but it does remind me of the ..
CLM dynamics 8 channel mic pre - DB8000s

I seem to recall having the lid off and saw 2017's on mic duties and 2150's for the limiter section.

( SoftStop - A signal approaching overload is gently compressed but if it exceeds the threshold it is effectively clamped to prevent the level rising further. )
... sounds like a limiter to me ??

I've got an m-series board at home, and I like it. Actually, I like the pres. Very neutral, but the highs are tame. Actually a really balanced sort of sound...definitely useful, even with better stuff around.

The rest of it SUCKS.

The eq's are better than Mackie, but nowhere close to ua pultec plug/waves. The power supplies have issues...mine has been repaired and it's still weird. The phantom is intermittent, and the output LED's stay lit fully when the board is powered on.

Looks like a nice box as well !

Hmm, as it seems most of these boxes are probably about mic-pre's that most of us have around as samples anyway - I figure I better get soldering. Have some SSM2019, INA103 & INA217 around.

And - a possibility most of these 8-micpre boxes don't offer to my surprise - I could then also pack a few different micpre-tastes together.

What do you all think, wouldn't putting different micpre-tastes in one box be the next step after the introduction of micpre's & linechannels side by side (think MS1202) ?

With those 24-bit recorders I think I wouldn't need a limiter, but we'll talk again after that great but clipped take...

I don't see the point of putting many and varied mic pres in one box.
A card rack system like Seventh Circle is probably a better idea if you want to go that way.

I still feel that 2 or 4 in a 1RU box is fine ... then swap boxes around as your needs demand.

I see your point, having a small amount (2..4) in one box it's better to see that as one swappable unit.

The DIY mic-pre's I'm thinking of is to use a 3HE box which takes modules using eurocards (the right name for this system doesn't come to mind right now), swapping is easy then and maybe up to 6..8 would fit in one 3HE unit. I'll check the Seventh Circle system - likely it'll be a related setup. Thanks for mentioning their system.

Bye,

Peter
