Multi-Band Comp

Just wondering if anyone has done a multiband comp?? I have used some plug-ins before and love it, but just curious about building an outboard one.

how do these typically work, is it several side chains working at a single control circuit, or something like several crossovers feeding independant control circuits? Probably the later, now that Ive typed this out...

As a first pointer, check this post.

The basic principle is simple: build a crossover, plug a compressor in for every band and sum the outputs.

Read up on the Dorrough "Discriminate Audio Processor" (DAP). That unit pioneered the concept of the self-contained multiband compressor. All of today's multiband comp/limiters are descended from it in one way or another.
