FYI:

Today only at Musicians Friend, the MXL990 mic for $49.99

Now where were those mods I saw on this forum just a few days ago....

Enjoy, Jack

all the mod entails is replacing the .22 (I think) ceramic caps with films, and changing the 1000pf across the capsule leads with a polystyrene, IIRK.

the 603 was the old model, which is the same as the 990/991 now, the 990 is just the large vocal style body, with the same circuit and capsule as the 991.

Today's Stupid Deal is the MXL 992 Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone for $89.99  (Reg. Price $130)

Quieter than the 990 with a smoother response, probably due to its larger capsule.

Note: I have no connection with Musicians Friend. Just thought some mic guys might be interested in the deal.

regards, Jack

is it really a LDC though? the 990 is advertized as such, but shares the same capsule as the 991/603...

I read that the capsule is larger than the 990 but I can't verify that.

The 992 has a large body and full sized capsule.
It is a great platform for modding. I have built a U67 clone and U47 clone in this body. With some manipulation an EF14 and Cinemag NiCo will fit.

The stock mic sound is very typical MXL with a 2sk170 on the front end. It can be improved with the typical cap upgrades.

Best,
