im a bit confused about some of the new soudking and puleso(sp) caps ive been seeing lately.

if one is trying to build up a u47 or a u67, ect. and they are trying to get as close to the real thing as possible, should they even bother with these or just try to get a real neumann cap made for that model?

ive seen some of the soudking caps that are supposed to be m7 copies but how close to the real m7 does it actually sound? cause if im building a mic that will run around 500-1000$, i dont want to not spend 300$ less and get a soundking and it not even sound like a u47 does.

sorry if im confusing. im just trying to understand how close to orginals these things are and about their quality, ect.

thanks if you can help me out!

asm / t,

If you will trying to get as close to the real U47 / U67 as possible, of course you shall use the orginal Neumann capsules for this microphones.

The chinese capsule manufactures have clone the Neumann and AKG capsules very well in mechanical and exterior aspect, but they have not same precision work when they apply the diaphragm on the capsule body, and they have not same experience about the diaphragm tuning tension.

The chines capsule sounds very different in the high end timpbre compare with the orginal capsules and if you test 50 capsule in same brand and type, you can find 10 that maybe sounds equal.

If you will clone a U67 (that is the best made lardge cap mike ever) you shall go for the orginal KK67 capsule.

if the money was an option, how big of a difference is there between the chinese clones and the original neumann replacement cpasules? is it worth serveral hundred dollars?

T,

It becomes on if you have luck or not when you buy one chines capcule, as I say before, they have a different high end timpbre, but they can also sounds different in the mid band and low end and also have other strange behavior.
The last years I have buy over 100 of chines capsules, and I have also the most of the chines brands and types in my reference collection, so I have be able to do a lot of tests and research around this things.

Of course, as a experiment capsule for your DIY microphone a chines capsule is a good thing to start with, I think it same in your country as here in Sweden, you can by a complete lardge capsule condenser mike with elastic suspension holder for around USD 100, and there you have a capsule that you can use for your mike project, and then you have a transformer, body, grill, conector, suspension holder for free.

Good luck
