It looks like replacement batteries for a small UPS are about the same price as hacking a power tool battery.  I think those would be easier to deal with.  It still seems like it will be a few hundred bucks to get it going when you include a charger.
 
Motorcycle/tractor battery, small inverter, and jumper cables to charge from your car will be $50.

AND will power *any* small 120V test gear.
 
Ahh, I missed it the first time. 12v - inverter- AC input. That makes sense, and  like you said will work for everything. Thanks!
