passive DIY A/B box

Anyone know of a DIY project similar in function to this thing:

My buddy needs a 2-input/1-output x 8 box, and 1200 seems excessive for that kind of thing.  I know there's gotta be a cheap way to do this with transformers...

Why transformers? I'd go for relay if looking for remote or just switch if not remote is needed... what is this for?

A/B or A/B/X?  switching for blind testing requires level matching and well behaved switching. A simple either/or input switch is easier.
