Hi All

I have a Sowter 3678 multi-tapped transformer and would like to use it to build a nice transformer isolated DI for acoustic guitar use. I have and use one of Bo Hansen’s excellent DI’s but I need one with similar input impedance and sound quality but with about 15 to 20db of gain ahead of the transformer as my guitar pickup (Baggs M1) is quite low output. I would like the DI to be phantom powered so this limits me a bit.

How would you guys go about getting gain and high quality sound for the transformer drive with just phantom power? Op-amp, simple transistor amp…?

Your suggestions would be appreciated!

Cheers
Ray

Country Hick, two fets and a J201 current source,

it is a DIY version of the Countryman DI,

you might need to drop the phantom voltage down a bit so you do not pop the transistors, you can power it from a battery pack also for super low noise,

Hi CJ,

I'm interested in this too.

All the links seem to be dead - do you have a schem ?

Thanks CJ

The Country Hick is a great sounding circuit but is only unity gain into the txfrmr. I need about 15 to 20 db gain to boost the pickup a bit

If I could get gain at the same audio quality as the Hick on P48 I'd be a happy man!!
