I have an old power amp with a dual 48VAC toroid transformer. Is there a practical way to get this to the 24VDC necessary for a preamp? I can think of only two ways (other than a second transformer which wouldn't be practical)
1. DC/DC converter
2. Voltage regulator with a serious heat sink.

Not sure if either is a good way to run is it?

you might try using the doorbell xmr from the other thread as a bucking transformer for a low heat solution,

Great idea. Not that it's not worth spending $100 more on a chassis and xfmr but sometimes the shipping on mult orders can turn an economical project into not so much. Thanks for the ideas. I like the unwinding idea if the dual primary idea doesn't work and learned something new with bucking transformers.
