Can anybody recomend a mic pre project where I could build 3 ch. and a power supply into a 1U rack space?

I was thinking 1272 might be a cool way to go, I was looking at the 7th circle kits, but there must be a more economical way to go.

Thoughts?

Wierd..

Is that input transformer any good? How do they squeeze all that into 1 octal?

Is it discrete? I mean, why an octal?

Has anybody tried this?

otherwise check out the Meta files for the various Mic-pres
green-pre or 312 based
almost any of them will fit 3 to a 1RU case

wow.. thanks for the tip on the jlm.

That looks like the ticket.

People seem to dig em too....

What do you mean "meta files"?
What do you mean "meta files"?
At the top of the Lab forum there?s a thread that says ?Sticky: Meta-Meta: Look here for overview..? In that thread are many topics with related threads grouped under them so that you don?t have to waste time searching around. You will find that the pres Kev mentioned (along with lots of other stuff) are listed in the Meta files.

Is this strictly for mics? or can I hook up my drum machine outs to 8 of them for 8 channels of raw preamp power?

Or is there a better suited preamp for these types of things, e.g. keyboards, drum machines, etc.

Mic-pre is not the only config for the JLM99v.

as for better ??
I think we should really know a little more about the Keyboard or Drum machine and your requirement and reasons for wanting the pre-amp.

A pre-amp can serve many purposes and not just for the obvious gain benefits.

If the Keys and DM need a simple method to get to the mixer in a live situation .. Then I am still a big fan of using a transformers with a tailored pad to suit each machine ...

This signal is then feed into the Live Mixer at mic levels.
I can explain more if you like.

I just want something to make the sound of my akai mpc2000xl "FAT" and "WARM" before going to tape, that's better than the pre's on my soundtracs board. (I know, I hated using those terms too, but it's the only way I can describe it.)

I do have a 2 channel M*nley dual mono pre, and that's o.k., but If i can build 8 channels of something that will blow that out of the water, I would like to do that. If I can come out of this pre and go straight to tape, bypassing my board gain.

I'd have to check my manual on the mpc2000xl for more details as far as what level is coming out of it, but i do know it's 1/4" unbalanced.

Thanks for the quick reply!

When you say your going to tape, do you mean analog tape?

99V pres would certainly help, but my experience is that 'warmth' and 'fatness' in programmed drums comes from a lots of things and cant be had simply but passing all the tracks thru single bit of gear. Unless you happen to have an A80 (or similar) lying around, which might be the only exception to that statement.

I find that making programmed drums sound the biz requires a lot of processing, in several stages. In plugin land, its common for me to have 6-8 different eq/compressor/distortion over a drum mix aswell as plugs on each track.

In analog land (and usually im somwhere between these two places) its usually just involves some really good compression and perhaps some eq from the computer or console. The real key tho is to treat the whole drum mix together, not individual tracks.

I love my AWA fet limiters, and more recently my two CBS Audimax II mu comps that Joe figured out a great mod for. They both can take programmed drums to that next level. However if you dont have pretty good sounds in the first place, theres not much that can be done.

yeah, I pretty much have all that down, good sound sources, grouping, compression, all that stuff, I just want a nice pre that will really pump my levels nicely....

Doesnt yr MPC have enough output level to drive yr recorder? What do you mean by 'pump up my levels nicely'? FWII I love the 99V on snare and overheads. Its fine on kick too but my fave is still 1073.
