just got an Altec 436C, but one of the tubes it was shipped with got smashed during transit. i figured i might as well swap out or get some backup tubes, so was wondering if anybody can recommend good tubes for the Altec 436C.

from reading around here and Gearslutz, most users keep it glued to the bass or vocals... so for those purposes in mind, what are some tubes/versions/brands to go for? RCA, Tung-sol, etc.

FWIW, it uses:

6BC8
6CG7
6AL5

i'm not opposed to spending more to get good quality; although i'll also won't go crazy and spend $500 on one tube either... thanks.

Can't say much about the others but the 6bc8s are something you just need to buy and try. they aren't so expensive. I have 6bc8's in my varimu and I've found huge differences in sound from tube to tube. I've done a lot of reading here and elsewhere that indicates this is normal.
I tried some dealers and there wasn't much in terms of premium. Based on a pretty small selection I have some TungSols and RCA's and they didn't necessarily perform better than GE's or Delco's. In this application it's more of a shotgun approach.
I wish I could tell you "hey use brand x, they're the best.

thanks for the reply. i've managed to contact Bowie on GS, and he's hooking me up with an assortment of NOS tubes that should work well. can't wait to hear the mix & match results.

use synonyma: Good tube<=>nuvistor. It is not WWII in the streets now. Or build a time-machine. Good luck.
