Just recvd a used, kit-upgraded, V67 in the mail. Naturally, I wanted to examine the upgraded circuit and capsule right away. As I was removing the capsule, the light hit it "just right" and I noticed a divot/dimple on the diaphragm. It's hard to capture it in a pic (see attached) but held in a certain way two "ridges" clearly meet at the point of the divot/dimple. Straight on, you can't see it at all. P1140808.JPGP1140809.JPGIt does not look like it's just a piece of particulate, and I'm definitely not touching it to find out!

Not good. It will limit the bass response of that side of the capsule, and some other things. Quick fix is not to use that side for front of that mic, swap the wires and turn it around if it is indeed front. I hope it's not single sided.

I believe it's dual sided, because the upgraded board has an "omni" switch (you have to disassemble the mic to get at the switch). As far as I can tell, the dimple is on the backside. The capsule only goes in one way, and the dimple faces away from the MXL logo, which, I assume, marks the front. I tested the mic right away with spoken word only, in both cardioid and omni, just to ensure that it works. I'm not proficient enough at present to detect artifacts that might be caused by the condition of the diaphragm. I'm actually planning to use it for acoustic guitar. Yes, I am quite new to large-diaphragm mics.
