I saw a reference to this Bang & Olufsen  being sort of the start of this type of design....

Nice and close but the 122V is a vacuum tube ribbon mic.  The tube acts as a head amp so you do not need a high gain mic pre.  it utilizes the same ribbon element as the 121.
