I can not read the IC but I don't think it is a 386 might it be a 324 quad?
The 8 pin is a 386 and is part of the sidechain led driver circuit. The 14 pin I don't recognize (PMI GP 8445), but the trimmers around it are for adjusting the meters in GR mode.

I know the FP photo was bad, but I figured we all know what it looks like.

BTW, am I breaking any "rules" by posting these?

Interesting that they use an LM386. I've thought about using the very same chip, with a stepup transformer, to drive an EL panel. That chip can put out almost half a watt into 8 ohms.

Yes, that's all fine if you're driving an EL panel, but a couple of LEDs? Do they hammer 40mAs though 'em or wud?

I've used some TDA2030s for that app Dave, but that's because I got loads of them

I got Manley clone PCBs and schematics for sale btw :green:

Well, I seriously doubt the LM386s make the sound in the ELOP. It's more the the vactrol, tubes, MIT caps and custom trannies...

I think they put the chip just to confuse us  How long before we'll see a commercial product sporting that 'special LM386 sidechain sound'? :green:

Maybe it's used for driving the outputs.. haha.. now that would be sucky

Well, she has enough money to pay for her PMs :green:

I always thought those manufacture forums was nuffin' but a plain ad for those companies... tsk tsk..

Maybe we should just mail her

All kidding aside, that junky little chip can make a great little guitar amp. Here's one that I built:

I recommend 1K for R9, instead of 560 ohms as shown. Less likely to motorboat at max output.

This chip is also used in the well-known "Smokey" amps.

Dave, did you grow up around the NY Metro area? Did you watch "Fists of Fury Theater" (kung-fu movie show) in the early '80s? I think it was on channel 11 or 9--or was it 5? I named the amp in honor of that show.

Now I just have to design a circuit that deserves to be called "Chiller."

EDIT: Oh man! At the bottom of that page, there's a link to the WPIX Yule Log. That was OUR Christmas cheer when we lived in Queens and didn't have a fireplace. Great memories...
Yeah, that's pretty kool :green: But you could make something with an ECL82/6BM8 that could be in your fist (almost :? ) too
Already working on it, dude! Ain't that a great little tube?

Yes, I have a breadboarded PP thing running now with some junky Jørgen Schou trannies from a sixties portable B&O taperecorder  much fun..

I imagine you could make a nifty little single ended baby with enough gain to use a guitar straight into it?

A quick Google image search turned up this example of a single-ended application. This could probably be modified to fit.

5K:8 single-ended output transformers, intended for tube radios, are pretty common and cheap, at least here in the States.

I never saw fists of fury theatre knowingly, but I remember watching kung fu on wor when I was a kid. Yulelog.net rules.

After I trademark my product name you'll all have to figure out what I named it after...

speaking of single ended, have any of you guys heard the badcat minicat? It is so devastating its wrong through a 4x12. My guess is that its just a matchless hotbox with a speaker transformer but perhaps Im wrong. Its single ended EL84 resulting in the most aggressive 5 watts around. Talk about a compressed sounding amp, holy!
