Solder in submini tube leads direct, avoid socket oxidation. Wind 4 or 5 turns of each submini tube lead around a 1/16 in drill bit to lengthen tube to solder connection. Heat sink this with long nose pliers while soldering and keep the pliers on a few seconds after removing the heat. Mount the tube lead side up to place grid lead closest to the capsule, with other leads positioned away from the grid lead. The 5703 does not require tube elements connected together except cathode and H+ in fixed bias mode. The 5840 requires G3 to cathode and G2 to plate (and perhaps cathode, G3 and H+ in fixed bias mode). Where the common connection(s) are made depends on available space or terminal board connection.

If you use a nuvistor like a 7586, use the socket and remove the flange. Heating nuvistor leads will destroy the tube.
