Hi all!

I was googling around for some filter designs and I caught my eye on this Steiner VCF
http://yusynth.net/Modular/EN/STEINERVCF/index.html

Since I don't know anything about modular synths and the way they're made, I'm confused with those CV inputs.
Is it possible to build this filter and feed it with just regular audio signal on the input stage, without supplying any signal on those CV inputs, and have it working? Or I still need some signal (oscilator, I suppose) on CV input to have it pass regular audio?

What I'm trying to grasp is if this filter would be usable as a standalone? Or it's designed to depend on the rest of the modular synth system.

I think it would be cool to have it in a mixdown for shaping kicks and basses!  ;D

In the absence of control voltage, the frequency of the filter would be just controlled by the frequency knob.

You don't need anything on the CV input.

Yes, but the performance would not be very good; THD and noise are quite high (in pro audio standards) and the range of working input voltage is not great.

I think that's basically what the Moog MF101 does.

Ok, I get it. Thanks!
I think I'll skip on this one. I hate stuff that sounds good but brings hum/noise into the mix. It's better to have average sounding unit but built to some standards than to have excellent sounding (in aesthetic terms) but noisy unit.

Is there some other similar schematic of a filter with resonance that can sound okay?
