Question:
Are these consoles, transformer balanced, all through the ins and outs ?

I might be inheriting a 900 series console soon...?

looks like one of these

Hi,

I actually have two 900 series desks. I like them a lot. The inputs are transformer balanced (the mix pre is) line input and return input is balanced as well. the groups out are also transformer balanced. On each channel you can find two inserts (pre fader and pre filter) and also a direct out. Chances are you'll have to wire them yourself although that is notdifficult. But..... they are unbalannced. The prefader insert can be balanced depending on the fader you have. Take a look at the mono fader PCB.... if it's not fully stuffed then the prefader insert is not balanced.... You can populate that board yourself .... it's not difficult and studer is known to only use of the shelf components in most cases.... NE5532......

Most of the time you have boosterinserts on these channels.... in this case the inserts get balanced by the use of balancing eurocards you can find in the bay below. The inserts on the groupfaders are most of time balanced as well using this method.

If you end up buying this desk... you'll have a good deal as it sounds really good. It's very neutral so don't expect this to be a rock board as are those tridents and MCI desks. But this is a very very good desk.... I have some schematics for a mod, switching the opamps in the channelelectronics.... it must give it a more coloured sound but haven't tried it out myself. I like the desk the way it is. Depending on the size of the desk..... if it's a 902 dont pay more then 4000 euro, don't get a 901.... they sell for 4000 euro as well as they are relatively small and easy to handle.

If I can be of further help...... please let me know.... Look in the schematic meta for the schematics on the studer server all your questions will be addressed by reading through those files..

What's your location?

If you're near the Netherlands you can check out this shop

http://www.dlse.nl/occasions/occasions001.html

I don't know if they have one for sale this moment, just check sometimes or ask them....

Thanx Geert for the info,

I'll take a look in the META section and see what they have for data on these consoles...

I see that 'Sonic Circus' has one for sale,
http://soniccircus.com/s.nl/it.A/id.10268/.f

the one I may purchase is in my homeland of Canada...

The Sonic Circus Studer is over priced and I emailed the other broker for pictures but still on the high end. Looking for a 963, 980, 990...

The studio... how much ?

another question:
in this picture... what's the difference with those input modules on the left, and the other input modules on the right.

That is a 960 not a 900..... The are limited in use and my comment is only for the desk on the first picture. There are several channelversions..... There are without eq or stereowithout eq.... maybe that's the difference... although I'm not well known with 960

The ones on the left has mic pres and EQs. The ones on the right is just line inputs without EQ.

I Know funky junk france is converting two big 64 channel desks to small little 12 channel desks  And the'll ask full blown price I fear... there is one on their site... I wouldn't pay that for one of those, although I like the desk a hell of a lot. I have one 24 channel 903 i'm restoring and I traded it with my manley varimu.... best trade ever, as I didn't really like my manley anyway, maybe wrongly setup I don't know. The studer 904 (my main desk) I bought for around 7500 euro. but it has fullblown metering (30 led) and 32 channelstrips (16 mono and 16 stereo with XY or MS stereo micpreamps  .... and was in perfect condition.

I'll have a fully automated 990 coming in january .... but it is totally disassembled and has to be fully rewired.... will take approximately 3 months of labour..... but snapshotautomation could speed up my recording process so I'll use the 904 as a submixer, for tracking . The 903 is going to be placed in my demostudio, but it still needs some work.

I have a custom of looking on ebay each day for parts of these desks.... mostly they are sold in pieces..... but Jos from www.dlse.nl, has around a dozen on stock  . You can bargain with him and he's a very nice and fair guy. He has a tendency of keeping the metering and the limiter cards though as he is currently building a fully blown 980 for his own studio You could get a full blown 32 track with the nice 4 band EQ channels from him for around 6000 euro. It will probably be a 904. But don't forget to bargain.....
