The VU meter on my LA2A doesn't always sit at zero when idle.  It's usually +/- 5.

I have adjusted the zero trim pot as needed, but it still doesn't stay at zero.  Any troubleshooting Suggestions?

It fluctuates cause of the heat inside the unit.  I would let it warm up for a hour or so then reset it so it reads zero and then just leave it.  Always use your ear when doing compression.  The meter is just a guide but not that accurate.

Thanks,
I didn't realize that they don't stay on zero due to heat.  Odd for such a pricey unit.  I do typically use my ears when compressing, but the OCD in me was expecting the meter to be at zero when no signal was being passed through it.

I hear ya, thats how I learned about the heat issue.  I would set it and then and hour later it would be off.  Pissed me off hahah.  Now when I turn it on its off quite a bit after an hour or so it back to normal hahahah.  I have two of hairball's meter in my Dual LA2A.
