Go check out Speedy West, who was popular in the 1950's.

I worked with his son (Speedy Jr.), who grew up in Tulsa, and  was working in Okla. and TX. a few decades back.  Jr. was a Hot-Shot rock player who also dabbled on steel, but not to the extent of his Dad.  I recorded a few sessions back in the 1970's with Sr, who was amazing!

Jr. and I were good friends (and around the same age), but alas...he passed recently due to cancer.

Sr. was also closely "aligned" with Leo Fender in the early days.  Check him out via Google.

Being a pedal steeler, I have to share some stuff.

If you've never seen the Time Jumpers in Nashville on a Monday night, put it on your bucket list. One of the best steelers ever for sure, and the whole band is tops. Paul toured with Dire Straits years back.

I used to live in Nashville and see stuff like this live, and walk away completely stunned. I know music is not all about how fast you can play, but jeez these guys are playing nice, tasteful licks and melodies at that speed, and these videos are very crappy representations of what it was like to actually be there. (not to mention the video glitches)

Another great player I used to see was Tommy White.

FWIW, I played guitar and keys since I was about 5, and took up steel at about 17 and it brought me to my knees. Difficult to say the least. But equally rewarding. And always had all the work I wanted because of the scarcity.

Any other steelers on groupdiy?

I have one.
Does that count?

I bought a Peavey Session 400 for it.

Nothing changed. I suck suck suck at it.
And I love the steel sound.

I have a friend who can play one very well. He can't impart his skill on me. No matter how we try.
I listen to him and just go  :-\

Nothing beats the pedal steel - I have an old Shobud single and am just a tinkerer on it.

But boy does it sound great!  I wish I had of started back in the early seventies, but I went for regular guitar instead.
Now in my 50s, I'm learning :)

I use it with the obligatory volume pedal and a low power and warm sounding SE tube amp plus 15" jensen.

My fav listen is The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo (Gram Parsons' version especially)  :)

Just fabulous .

I love Don Buzzard's playing. A good example is Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown's "Folks Back Home," but the version off of Down South in The Bayou Country. I can't find a youtube link, but check it out if you can. The later rendition on youtube is off of a much more recent album and isn't like the mid-seventies one.
Holy moly, tis the best!
@gltech-
I play lap-steel and have wanted to get a pedal steel for a long time. What do you recommend?

Shobud    :D :D :D

For an experienced guy, one of them fab doubles! Works of art they are.

Here's my humble single and amp  :)

These guys like it too - they always stop by and slouch around by the fence next to where I'm playing ....

'Can we haz applz plz'  for sure  is the main motivation, but they also do seem to like the music !

Can't have country music without the horsies!
