Hi there!

I would be glad if someone could guide on this one=)

What is the true defenition of 'variable gain amplifiers'?

Is it equavilent to the 'gain reduction circuit' of compressors/limiters?

Can you call the heart of all 'gain reduction' topologies, a 'variable gain amplifier'...even if the topology applies 'variable resistance'?

Cheers!

Yes.

Thanks!

So does that mean that the 1176, for example, is built around a 'variable gain amplifier', which contains of a JFET circuit?

Does this stage also provide amplification, or just reduction?

And is 'gain reduction circuit' just another name for the same stage?

Cheers!

Why is this important?

Anyone familiar with audio circuits knows the FET- LDR- PWM- and VCA-based designs for electronically controlled signal level. There is hardly any confusion from how you name it, VGA or VCA - we all know what we're talking about..?
