So I've tested The philbrick/PRR pre in my studio.

Compared with my 1272 it faired well.

It actually sounded more aggressive and had more character in the high end.

It wasn't quite as round and tight in the low end.

Is an A-21 a proper output transformer? 500:500 freq response is 30HZ to 30K and it says 15dbm max. on it. I think its is more of a mic input.

Heh-heh. Low GBW amp with slappy booster putting a little splashy flavor on the highs. You'll find uses for that.

No, that's a utility low-level line transformer, for use inside a big desk or for a balanced input on a sensitve amplifier. So at high level the bass is going to be sloppy.

But wait. What is the DC voltage on the input winding of that transformer? If more than a few mV, the transformer could be semi-saturated even before the music starts.
