Hi all,
I have 2 xfmr "thrown in the bag" by the gentleman who sells me some ouncers recently (I thought that happened only in the movies ).

One is a old Beyer "peanut", the leads was cut too short by the previous owner. I opened it up in order to find a way to extend their lenght. BUT the wires are soooo thin that my strippers can't even  do the job. I only got one chance! If I messed up, the wires will be too short and I'll lose the tranny.

Question: How do  professionals stripped cable that THIN ? I really want to salvage this one.

The second one looks like an Ouncer (same shape, size and screws), but the paint vanished and there's no indications on it besides "25A36" (and even for these numbers the paint is half stripped). On top of that it was banged. I didn't measure it yet, just tried to pass signal. I would like to save it also.

Question: Do you know a solution for the shield ? Is buying a O-17 will work (never saw one in real life)?

Thanks in advance for your answer gentlemen, and women. If I can't salvage them, they'll have to go strait to CJ's lab for dissection :-[ :'(. Please no! They're too young to die!

Will the insulation melt? You can melt it with your soldering iron and pull it off with a pair of tweezers, then bend it to create  a hook for your extension wire.

My wire strippers have a set screw, and they were cheap. Are yours just set diameters?

Brilliant! Thanks midwayfair & Johnblue. I'll try that and hopefully it will do the trick. And yeah, midwayfair my strippers are just set diameters (the cheapest of the cheapest  ), totally useless in this situation.

Thanks again guys for your posts. Much appreciated.

If someone as an idea for the broken shield ouncer, I'll take it. As you may have noticed I'm a total beginner AND I come from the musician side of the force (not a technician nor an engineer :-\).

you can also use a new razor blade and circle the insulation with a low pressure cut,

i might already have some info on that Beyer, what is the part number?

audiomixer thanks for this trade secret!  I might have used it a couple of time already...

CJ the model # is 35833. It's seems to be an early one, before they use their coding system. I found a datasheet of another model# that seems close enuff BUT it will be great if you have info of THIS exact model.

Do you have an idea for fixing this shield CJ?

Another angle. CJ did you see this xfmr somewhere? 4 pins, "25A36" (or something similar) written on the side of it like that. Exactly the same dimension than an ouncer. The metal thickness and/or "texture" seems a bit different than the UTC.

Update:
The melting trick + the teeth trick worked perfectly guys. Thanks again for these highly scientific methods. I really appreciate it. I'll find some colored cable to "re-color code" them tonite and hopefully it will be back to life.

Any info about re-shielding the damaged ouncer will be fantastic also...

Thanks in advance.

Update: The TX is up and running. Sounds really nice despite its size. Great surprise. Thanks again for the help y'all.

CJ, I sent you a PM but was you able to find some info about the 35833 ? Keep me posted.
