Hi all!

A question from a newbie: I'm taking my Behringer Cybermix apart, because I want to try out the THAT 2159 (32)'s in the SSL comp I'm about to build. My problem is that I can't get them out. It's of course soldered on a factory in china and it is soldered well

I've tried to remove the tin solder with my soldering iron and my mechanical-tin-solder-suction-device (sorry don't know the proper word in english :green:  )

Does anyone have some tips on this????......and maybe the right word for the "suction-thingy"

Thanks

Morten

ummm I'd rather buy some vca's than tear something apart but I guess to each their own...

sounds like they might be plated through? it can be tough... if you didnt get it all out the first time then re-solder the pins... the solder will aid with the suction.. if you sucked a portion out but theres enough to hold the pin then you wont get enough suction to get the rest out.. becareful of heating them too much..

alot easier to buy some VCA's if you ask me :?

For the really tough surface mount stuff, this is what I use:

A few words from the school of painful experience:

If you are going to suck the solder out of a PTH, especially ones with IC pins in, then before you attempt to pull the component, get a small pair of long-nose pliers and wiggle the pin until it 'clicks' or you can see that it's completely free. This will break any remaining adhesion in the hole, and stop you from pulling out the plating (with a bit of luck). When removing an IC, make sure that all of the pins are free before trying to remove it from the board.

A really good result is when you've gone around all the pins, turned the board over and the IC falls out.

Thanks for the tips  I have some THAT 2181LB's but they're pretty expensive here so since I wont be using the Cybermix anymore and it has 32 2159's, my plan is to try a 2159 in the sidechain and 2181's in the audiochain....

Fit a "hellermann" sleeve on the end of the solder sucker.... the soft rubber gives a better seal against the PCB and absorbs the impact of the spring so you don't damage the pad.

They do of course melt.... but you simply trim off the melted end and carry on.

This works well for some of the more difficult joints.

I have gear and may be able to help you if you can post the thing (not too big). Can you send a photo over the task? It will only cost you the postage .
