OK, as many of you probably know, I finished my G1176  finally. I want my next project to be less painful with quick gratification and no calibration required. Oh, and a design that doesn't require matching FETs, etc. I am looking for a non-transparent mic-pre project. Is there anything out there that fits the bill? I am embarrased to ask this but I don't have a lot of time. It took me about 15 months to complete the G1176. Don't wanna go through that again for a while.

Something based on the Hamptone JFET preamp? There's some boards floating around that could be easily found, or another cheapskate route is to buy the JFET overdrive kit and appropriate the board, add iron, and work out a voltage doubler for Phantom. OEP input iron is cheap and colorful, and maybe Edcor for the output iron.

You know, with thw hamptone you need to mactch the fets and in the end you need two modules for a ic preamp, so, it´s not that easy.

I would go API 312 with melcr opamp...

Yep, A*P*I will be made as well - it's just that I have also JPF-boards begging to be stuffed. :thumb:

But let's change the question then:
with those A*P*I-orig.TXs 'on hold',
how would the Edcor WSM 600:600 do with a Melcor 1731 or 2*5*2*0 in front ?

Thanks,

Peter

I would recommend the Seventh Circle Audio kits or the JLM kits. Most of my time has been spent sourcing parts and building ugly chassis. SCA takes care of both. Quick, easy, painless, and high quality.

if you build a JLM kit with his opamp, I would imagine that you'd use it for the rest of your life, its that good. Not very dificult to build either. The racking and power supply and all that stuff is gonna be the same no matter what you build, so you might as well put something really cool in the box. Of course a 312 style thing would be way cool along with a list of other stuff, but the JLM 99v opamps are insanely good.

Pretty much, any transistor thing you chose to build that we talk about here is gonna be more or less about the same difficulty, more or less.

Soundguy, have you an opinion about the JLM opamp vs. the Forssell opamp? I'm looking to buy one of these for my next project but unsure of which one.. I want something insanely clear.

the 992 has a very forward midrange, I dont have a ton of experience with it, but so far I like it for vocals. the 993 is the "clearest" of the bunch but it sounds really cool, Im not too sure how to describe it, compared to the 992, its a good compliment, it has a bigger bottom and is sorta scooped in the mids where the 992 is bumped. It might not be an actual scoop but may appear that way because of the extended bottom, hard to say for sure. The 99V is very 1272 ish, very silky high end, just very silky all around.

all three are really good opamps.

FWIW, I've just deleted my original reply - replacing it with a more general observation: this is a great place - I mean, threads from about a year ago are effortlessly continuated without pain - new relevant info popping up & such. Talking about dedication...(and too many :sam: :sam: on my side)

Cheers,

Peter

Please ignore all my posts for the upcoming few days- been just re-blown away by some SF-act that was about nothing but had THE dedication).
You didn't express a preference for tube or solid state, but (if you'll forgive the shameless self-promotion) the One-Bottle Pre is about as simple as they come.
Thanks for promoting it, Dave. I'm looking to build a "real" pre or three also and have been waffling hard about SCA kits or a more hard core DIY project.

Being new here I hadn't run across your spud design in my searches and random walks thru metatonia. After I looked at it I decided to dig into my box-o-tubes and see if I had a 12AV7. Wouldn't you know it--I have one--NOS Sylvania. It was in the last bag at the bottom of the box and I probably bought it by mistake thinking it was a 12AY7 (by the dim lights in some long forgotten surplus junk store). Anyway, now it seems meant to be

Thanks again,
