I had a capsule replaced in one of our Gefell mics. I had the old capsule sent back with the mic since it can be used in a cardiod pattern mic only. Actually the mic I sent in for repair was cardiod only but would have to be positioned backwards to work if the original capsule was to still be used in it.

The capsule has one damaged diaphragm so it can still be used for something cardiod.

What would you do with it? Use it in a home brew kit or use it as a upgrade to a cheap mic?

Looking for ideas.

get korby, stephen paul, or another high end reskin company to reskin the complete thing, and build a u47 around it using an ef14. thats what i want to do. if you dont want the headache of building it up. i'd be interested in buying the capsule, ive been looking for a m7

Hi Kirk

It depends on how the other diaphragm is damaged as to how
you can use it.
If the damaged diapragm is ripped, you need to get it re-skinned
in order for the capsule to work in cardioid mode as both diaphragms
are needed but only one is connected to the amplifier.
If the diapragm is sound but has gold missing from it or something
then yes it can be used as only one side needs to be electrically connected.
I hope this helps.
Slap me if you knew all this.

Slap!!

Just kidding.

The capsule has a small ding / crease on the front diaphragm at the edge. I sent it in due to a bit of distortion. I now think themic had been dropped because the inner grill that attaches to the mount is a bit dented at the top. The dent aligns with the ding in the diaphragm but I don't get how the grill could have touched the capsule. The outer grill has no evidence of damage.

Maybe the inner grill got a little dented while packing it for shipment back to me?

The repair shop (C-Tek) said the mic would work at spec if they rewired it to use the other diaphragm. I declined since the capsule couldn't have been turned around because of the screw pattern on the mount. We have like 13 of these mics and I know the interns can't be trusted to set that mic up so the rear diaphragm would face forward.
