I have used short runs of standard XLR cable as AES connections between machines. WHat would happen if I used Quad mic cable?
what would happen if?

probably nothing.. For short runs, mic cable works just fine..

Mogami states that all of their two conductor mic cable is within AES spec, but their quad is not, impedance-wise. But yeah, for short runs you can get away with it fine. The "eye" does look worse after 25' of Canare starquad than 500' of mediatwist cat6 UTP cable, I know, I checked, but it's certainly more than useable.

what exactly is this 'eye' of which you speak? 
The "eye" is a waveform pattern on an oscilloscope, monitoring digital signal integerty..:

Not; Eye pattern normal (time, Y) signal,
where time length of pattern corresponds (1/ ) to multiple of baud rate of modulation.
It is digital signal after matched filter.
If you samlple eye pattern (al the top of eye) and decide
that values to digital, you can detect some simple digital
modulations.
We do eye pattern because on that we can recognize distortion,
and its origin. And we can observe weak distortion, what yet not
affect bit error rate.
