Neve 1290 build completed!!

I finally finished my 1290 (1073 mic pre only)! It sounds great - especially at less than $300/ch! A while ago I posted about a PCB I had made with two pre stages, the driver stage, and most of the other components from drawing EH10023 and EN10041. This worked well but it still needed an external rotary switch to make a complete preamp. Wiring the rotaries turned out to be time consuming and a hassle so I designed a new board that features a PCB mounted rotary. This makes wiring very simple. I can build one channel in an evening now.

I wanted to thank this forum and Geoff Tanner for the helpful information!!

Hi 3nity,

no phase, no pad, no trim, just 5db steps - all I need. I did this to keep cost down. ($400/ch includes case, PSU, transformers and rotary) I designed the PCB myself. Then I had a PCB manufacturing company make me 16.

Digikey will do a special Grayhill order for you. I've checked around, and their prices are about the best.

Lowfreq: PSU (JLM ACDC with Amveco TE62085-ND) is in an external cast aluminum enclosures.

tommypiper, synthi: I'd be happy to sell those (2 layer, solder masked, silk screened) boards at $20 USD/ea + shipping.

I`d like to get at least two boards. For international shipping USPS airmail is fine, the boards can go in a letter post and is faster and cheaper than parcel post. use the USPS calculator @ www.usps.com

Notice that this is not the 1290 schematic.
It’s a 1073 schem. you edited.
It's probably very similar but it is not the same.
I can send the original 1290 schematic if someone need it.

laitue; you are correct, but this is why I mentioned the EH10023 reference. :wink: I've redrawn this 1073 schematic to be less confusing than the others; it was the inspiration for the Neve 1290 boards I designed.

i just ordered two of these boards ez1290 and they look great.

thick traces and clean silkscreen. highly recommended. ill let you know how they sound after the carnhill group buy!!!!!!!!!!

That looks like the Canare Sepia wire in there. Great wire.
You should check some original schemos, because you will be wanting to tie those trannies to chassis, as well as the output XLR pin 1's.

Buschfsu: glad you like the boards!! I have a feeling you'll like the sound as well!!

Sodderboy: Good eye!! That's Canare L4E6AT in there! The only thing you gain by connecting pin 1 of the output is the risk of ground loops. It's not needed since pin 1 is already grounded by the device AFTER the preamp (compressor, A/D converter, etc).

The only change I'll make is incorporate a custom rotary switch that already has some of the pins removed. I'm working with Grayhill on this and will have a part# shortly. These custom switches are only a few dollars more; Grayhill is a great company to work with!!
