LEM Studio tape echo, to refurbish or not to refurbish?
« on: March 15, 2010, 03:55:42 PM »
Hi all, my first post on this nice forum! I'm Andrea from Italy, a diy nut... as anybody here I think :)
Well, straight to the point:
a friend of mine ask me to refurbish an old lem tape echo/mixer, I think this unit is from about '75... can't find great infos on this model...
He'd like to use this unit in his recording studio, a vintage oriente kind of studio... but I'm not shure about the quality...
do you think it worth the effort (money/time) refurbishing it (caps and pots) or better leave it as it is and look for something better?
thanks in advance

ps. I hope my english in not too bad :)

Your english is better than my italian!
I don't know how the electronics sound, but you can approach it in steps-
recap the power supply, re-cap the channels, clean don't replace the pots, and then check how it actually sounds.
If he likes, then you can go onto the tape echo side.
It is probably the kind of equipment he wants in the studio, so it is worth it.
The PCB traces on equipment of this era are fragile, so be careful when removing caps.

Obviously making it work would get you more money selling it
and tape echo's go for good money these days
I'd start with the psu and a pair of channels with the echo
send & returns [ maybe that means the masters too ,
may end up being a bigger job , take your time ]

Thank you guys for encouragement and advices!
I've just started the work, using elna caps for the channels and f&t for ps... I think they should be ok...
Ill let you know how the thing will sound!
