Both sides look exactly the same so its impossiable for me to know which is the front or back.

Both sides ARE excatly the same, so the front is the one at the front of the mic. If you cross your wires then you'll have to sing into the rear of the mic when in cardioid.

Well, it doesn't look great but it should be secure and still work - let your ears decide! You may get slight asymmetry in figure of 8 pickup, but I doubt you'll notice it.
