I know. Crazy.

But can it be done? My guess is the hardest part is the disc in the can.

Ideas? Schems?

Go to the telray oilcan forum - the threads on all of that will keep you busy for days  ;)

I have an old one - very interesting and worthwhile to restore.

That forum has a lot of archival threads, with lots of technical discussion of the platter, and attempts to make.  I know - it took me ages to read through everything.  You will need to do your homework  ;)

The disc is the hardest part it seems.

Everything else is obtainable. Theres a guy supposedly making discs, probably the way to go. Making the disc sounds like unreliable chemistry.

Their not entirely unobtainable, just a bit expensive. They come up once in awhile.

I've fantasized about using old five-and-a-quarter inch floppy disks as a delay-- I think I pondered it long enough that the floppy is now as hard to find as the oil can, ha!

Never seen a DIY version of an Oil Can delay.
They definitely sound very good and unique.

Dont know how the mechanism/technology works,  visiting the "telray oilcan forum" will provide more answers.

Anyway if there's info on how it could be done I would help for sure  in trying to build a prototype.

Old Tel-Ray page with a lot of info, the site is down for a long time, so had to use Way back machine.

a community dedicated to these units, a lot of info there, probably the best place to start as a DIY project and gather some more interest

Ive got piles of those motors. But thats the easy part!

Its on my radar. Im keeping my eyes out for a suitable can.

But alas...... im building a la2a, am864u, and a dearmond right now on top of a cutting lathe refurb and a pile of other repairs and refurbs.

It uh.....might be awhile.

Im trying not to pick up anymore projects, but this one is too tempting. These schems will help tremendously

You were the one that asked for it!!

LOLOLOLOL

By the way what motors are those? which type?

I seem to start a billion things at once so this year im trying to force restraint and not start anymore, so i can finish what i have. That being said, there's almost always something to do!

It uses the same motor you find in a dearmond tremolo, old rim-drive turntables and "range hoods". It's also the slow motor on a leslie two speed stack.

Super simple operation and maintenence. You basically plug it in, see if it still works and oil it. Done.

I kinda went crazy harvesting them in case i had a few bad apples, but every one of them works. Even after rotting in an uncontrolled damp/humid enviorment!
