sorry, I can't sit at my computer 24x7 and whackamole these..

Yesterday I had a dentist appointment so forum was uncovered for a few hours in the after noon.

This morning I was outside doing some yard work , and will return out there after I eat some lunch,

I've deleted about 8 spam accounts just today... but they are still active... Today's theme is russian movies.

We are working on some more effective strategies but still a work in process.

Are you volunteering to be a backup spam mod? Or maybe do some yard work for me?

JR

@Pucho the russian movie spam is likely russian, but working roughly US hours, at least not sleeping when they should be. I have also gonged italian spam, and viet namese spam in recent days. Apparently an international pastime.

edit////I'd be afraid that my computer will be compromised if it isn't already and it would make things worse :-[

Seems like every time I come on, I see these darn things .....usually posted several minutes before though......or after.....and during just like now........

I try to report all I can, lately they have been coming faster than the system will let me report.

Not my call, and we are working on a strategy that could nip these spammers in the bud... but requires some special coding.

I have 14 unopened emails complaining about spam, since the first thing I do when I return to my computer is flush them... the emails are redundant.

I just look at the new member list and check all new posts. The vast majority today are russian movie spam, while I've seen others.

Make that 15 unopened emails (wise guy).

That just spams the moderators when we are already dealing with an active attack.

The email reports were useful when spam activity was infrequent but when getting tens a day the spams are hard to miss.

Except for when I am out working in my yard, where I am headed again as soon as I can get away from my computer.

For now I ask for a little patience from the forum. If you see spam that doesn't go away for several hours then report it, but we are aware of this current attack.

Sorry for the inconvenience but I have some yard work calling me I need to finish before it rains tomorrow.

There´s not the slightest reason to question the way you´re doing your job (thanks btw.) and I don´t think that´s what the op was about-
The question for me is what is that BS about, I mean they are not even trying to sell something? What do they want? Making the world (even more) a stupid place?

The vast majority are selling something like viagra...

some have squirrelly links in their text signatures, the movies

everybody is hiding something except for me and my monkey

JR

PS: Sorry if I am curt, but I am pretty busy these days, you guys only see a fraction of the spams that only get through becaus all the mods are busy or sleeping so not looking. I should be out in my yard right now rearranging dirt.

I will repeat the suggestion I made last time we had lots of spam. Moderate new members until it is clear they are genuine. I do this on all the boards I moderate. I also ask all new members as part of the sign up process to say a few words about why they want to join the group and point out that  they will be initially moderated so there may be a dyas delay in their first messages getting through. It means a little extra work for a moderator but you can do it any time you choose and it stops spam dead in its tracks.

Cheers

thanks for the suggestion but we can vet them easier than that, just review every new members first post. If it is spam they are gone, if not they live.

I kind of do that now but I have to manually check the members list for new members first posts, and then look at them. It would be cleaner and reduce the forum member's exposure if we could do this before the posts are allowed to publish (my goal).

This requires some code that has not happened yet.

we are already brainstorming this in a non public area of this forum.

JR

PS: BTW I appreciate the patience to not report every single spam while I was out rearranging dirt in my yard. (Boink, just whacked another one-  AundreaShe)

The lack of diction /grammar  make the jokers in the pack easy to spot , common sense should be enough to tell you not to click

Asking a simple question 'why are you here' like Ian suggests will thwart the usual mass sign up and spam schemes where only email username and password are generated/collected.
