1176 rev a troubles

Just bought a hairball mnats2.0 1176 rev a and testing it out.

The sound is veeery harsh/bright, with a big lack of low end.
And the output knob is only doing a few db when turning it all the way back and forth.
And the vu meter is working ok when all-buttons-mode is engaged, but when doing single ratio button, the needle sits at 30db and pushing down to 0, seems like the wrong way compared to what i've experienced otherwise?!

I've tested from two different preamps (1073 and a pacifica) with different settings (pad etc).

Any ideas of where i could start to look or test to troubleshoot this?

You can start by trying to calibrate the unit
