I'm having a pain in the butt of a time trying to find some decent 600:600ohm transformers for the PRR compressor.

Anyone know of decent ones that I can get in the states. I know this sounds funny, but I've only been able to find modem transformers.

Hey CJ!
Ya! Got em! Send you one when they arrive!
( there's still another 6 pack available)
BTW , Are you interested in putting an Edcor WSM and an Altran C-2870 thru the sadly required paces? I have one of one of each to donate!

cheers!
Lance

I was just kiddin, and maybe 1/100000 hopin, but that takes the cake!
Good deal!

Read the small print, the wise guy shows six and sells 2.
Not uncommon.
So, I will compensate with some heavy cash flow.

If you can dig it, please dig it.

First time on the exulted Tamura line.

China might take a while but good things come to those who wait my mama said one day under the old oak.

Or I trade 2 API output kits if you be interested up there in the great white north.

> Rat Shack didn't have em.

It was common in stores in the 1990s; RS's car-audio line has shrunk.

RS's Website lists it as "In stock - Usually ships in 1 - 2 business days" "Add to cart". My limited experience with RS's web-order has been very good.

It isn't really a Radio Shack part: I've seen the exact same part on the big German parts shack. The name escapes me, maybe one of our German friends will jump in.

Crutchfield has a similar part PAC SNI-1 and PAC SNI-1/3.5. They are probably all made in the same Asian factory, essentially the same guts, but your choice of leads, case, and logo.

Hey therecordingart,
I have a thread on the blackmarket trying to work a buy for some Lynx.

If you go to he's site you will find a few versions of the AT600/600

you can also get something similar to the rat shack models from parts express for $10. part number 265-012 :

the parts express version has the advantage that there might be other things worth buying from them, such as film caps, tube sockets, etc. if you need a cell phone, however, journey to your local shack.

when you open the parts express cylinder up, you see a pcb with these two transformers on it:

i used these on a build of PRRs compressor and they work just fine. i don't know if they are identical to the rat shack ones or not, but i bet they are similar.

with a 50ohm source impedance, i measured that +7dbu @ 20Hz = 1% THD. so they saturate, but they're not big, so no suprise there. very lightly loaded, they do ring a bit above the audio band, but terminated with 5k they are flat within 1db from 10Hz to 45kHz, -3db at 55kHz. i'm guessing that this is all due to the rather high interwinding capacitance (550pf) and that they look to be simply layer wound, one winding measuring 170ohms DCR and the other 220ohms. i measured a bit above 6H on the sencore, which is comparable to the edcor WSM600/600s. the edcors, however, have a much lower DCR, bigger core (harder to saturate), center tapped windings, and flatter frequency response.

so, have no fear, the ground loop isolator type transformers are fine. i bet the edcors would work just as well if not "better" though some may like the sound of saturation.

Looks like the RS guts.

Would be wise to change-out the wires and put the whole works back in the iron can.

> +7dbu @ 20Hz = 1% THD.

The plate transformer will never see that much level. More like -10dBu.

The input can be driven past +7dBu, but the poor 12AU7 will be making ~1%THD rising rapidly. And unless you record low-passed pipe organ, the 12AU7's broadband THD will tend to overwhelm whatever the transformers do for any 20Hz in yur music.

Hi
Can I use in PRR Vari-mu Beyer line transformers:
Here are some specifications:
1:1 (1K/1K)
30-15000Hz +/-0,5db
Max input for 1% THD, 8V on 30Hz
Thanks
Duka

Beware! Not all cans are filled with gold. I got some "ground loop isolators" from MCM Electronics and they also have an ELECTROLYTIC cap in series- the whole mess mounted on a PCB. Plastic can, gold label. Definitely a Sears isolator.
That RS isolator gave me such peace with all my semi-pro equipment clients in the 89-93 era! SECK console and Microverb? No problem, no hum. And it has a nice bump in the high end, which was key for going into the AKAI 12 track. What a boat anchor.

Same address, Lance!
Right on, Buddy, first time for a Tamura.

That sounds werid but lets go with it.
