Cheap practices

Maybe they tried both and switched sounded better who knows? I never tried one myself, but I´ve heard that there are pretty good switehd PSUs out there... It´s in fact just much much hard to make a decent DIY switch PSU than using a LM317. OH, that´s for sure.
Could be of course, we shouldn't be too quick to disregard the switcher.
I haven't checked whether terms are used like 'replica of the old circuitry' etc, but my best bet would be that the switched PSU was simply cheaper than an old fashioned iron power TX & the 317/7824/...

Point is, the designer/compiler of the UA box didn't need to design the switcher himself, it'll have been available as a pre-designed module so you can just pull one out of a Chinese fab.
(Applying a switched PSU module i.s.o. a linear supply might require a somewhat different kind of attention but the hard part will have been done).
So I guess they just compared the BOMs and the version with the switcher came out lowest.

But hey, I wasn't there, so...

Bye,

Peter
..but smps requires mandatory emc-testing, which is not cheap at all..
Fully agreed, additinal stuff required. In case they went switching for cost reasons they must have taken this into account when doing the BOMs.
Wow. I think Winston was eaten by The Fat Bastard.
No, -though i did indeed figure out his true identity:

He's an "Ecky thump" warrior. -Ecky-thump is an aincient martial art, involving using cunningly innocent-looking weapons, such as 'Black Puddings'...

He's obviously a highly-placed Sensei, though -as I'm sure he knows- he may have met his match, since I'm a third-dan-twat.

As in the same martial art which developed the infamous Eeh-bah-gum fighting technique? I'm staying out of here.

Encasements of dried congealed pigs blood are without doubt the best weapons available
underground news ticker: ...whisper....UA outsourced psu developement to Uli B.'s chinese fabs...
:?: :green:
Nah, Uli still uses those old-fashioned medieval kind of PSU's...
And that one uses real filament lights - not just cheap leds - to light up the tubes!! expensive...

FWIW, it's the T1953.

W.r.t. filiament lights... I'm wondering if there's a 'real' bulb behind that sexy UA-jewel... why not a white LED ?! But enough !
I just saw that - I was thinking what are those min tubes...
Cheeky sods they are
Hey stop it! Please look at that beefy toroid, not at the lamps'n'valves

And no, nobody has stolen any PCBs from this box...

Bye !

What's the little card in front of the switcher with the scabbed-on power resistors? Maybe a linear reg following the switcher for the audio stuff?

Most likely. I see no wiring from the 'Uli-switcher-unit' to the 1176-cards themselves.

If you think Uli is crazy because of the lights in the T1953...
there is a cooler unit out there...

The mighty MAGICIAN T1950 What a great box! Regrettably discontinued.

T1950_medium.jpg

The bearinger engineering process was something like this:
-put some tubes into a box
-see that the tubes don't look like tubes (no illuminating)
-put some lights behind the tubes so that it looks nice
-see that the box is fooking hot now
-add a fan to cool down the box BECAUSE of the lights !!!

Is this cool or what? :green: Tube warmth... thats true! (maybe this is the reason why they don't used leds)
