Could be of course, we shouldn't be too quick to disregard the switcher.
I haven't checked whether terms are used like 'replica of the old circuitry' etc, but my best bet would be that the switched PSU was simply cheaper than an old fashioned iron power TX & the 317/7824/...
Point is, the designer/compiler of the UA box didn't need to design the switcher himself, it'll have been available as a pre-designed module so you can just pull one out of a Chinese fab.
(Applying a switched PSU module i.s.o. a linear supply might require a somewhat different kind of attention but the hard part will have been done).
So I guess they just compared the BOMs and the version with the switcher came out lowest.
But hey, I wasn't there, so... :wink:
