Hi folks, there is a lot of advertisement on groupdiy.com now. This is totally ok and I really understand that the guys behind groupdiy.com need money to keep this fantastic resource alive.

My question is, are there any plans to offer an advertisement free membership for paying members in the future?

Cheers!

same here on phone--maybe other sites too, might have subsided. no problem yet on firefox osx

mostly farceb**k really wants my participation. 9/10 of ads/popups

I use adblock software, and I use the yellow Donate button at the bottom of the page.  I don't know how much they would be paid if I let the ads through, but I bet for one user it is a lot less than what I donate.  And I only donate $10-20 here and there.  If anyone cares to find out and do the math, I'd be happy to donate more if I am wrong.

The website displaying G$$gle ads only makes money if somebody actually clicks on the ad. I can probably count the ads I've ever clicked on one hand and I don't care much for the disruption of the website they cause and the personality tracking that comes with them. I would never run any browser without a cookie/ad/tracker blocker.

By donating directly you cut out the useless middleman, more money to the forum.

These ads in the middle of posts are often lingerie, underwear, bikinis, etc.... hard to tell them apart from the spam.

JR

[edit  as I've shared before my cookies reflect viewing a lot of spam porn right here, just  before i delete them, because moderation complaints from the forum members are not always reliable enough to act upon without checking the post first to verify a violation...  you're welcome. [/edit]

It is not a problem on my desktop computer but on my Android mobile phone. The legibility and usability suffer here, sometimes the advertising extends over the navigation. The fullscreen ads suck, too. Thematically, the advertisements are really suitable for the ambitious solder-slinger. Russian and asian ladies and of course kitchens, its all there... ;)

I agree, the ads that have suddenly begun t appear in the middle of a post I dislike intensely and report them 'as ad covers content'. Don't know if it will do any good but doing nothing definitely won't.

Cheers

If ads really bother you,  switch to opera browser.

I use Firefox which stops ads dead.

However, to support this forum I have it white listed.

For a long time, ads were limited to the top and bottom of a page which was no bother. I don't want to reduce the revenue stream to this site so I tolerate them.  Now they have begun to appear in the middle of posts which IS annoying me.

Cheers

What about a monthly member fee to join. Would $1. A month from members make this work .  This new model is full of ads and much slower on the phone now.  It might also keep people away that aren’t into electronics.  Now it just keeps me away waiting for my phone to load all the add data because i don’t have WiFi  wear I’m staying so the cell data is slow along with having a iPhone 7+. So Apple is pulling there routine to make you trade for a new phone to work proper.  Very annoying new browser model.

See about adblock for your browser, or a different browser.  Firefox and Chrome are both available on iphone.

This new ad attack is on my iPhone.  When I got home finally,  the MacBook pro with Safari does not have the same issues as the iPhone so far.  more aimed at smart phones, for me anyway.

I also have many ads pop up. Weirdly enough, it's for Trump polling, petition support requests for ideas I don't agree with, gun ads, aggressive and politically themed clothing, et cetera. I just flag it as inappropriate. Its probably because of my cookies and web history(funny, because I am quite from the other side of the coin)but I would prefer an ad that is only selling something, preferably without pushing an ideology, if ads must be present. I appreciate that the site needs income. I would prefer the porn spam JR mentioned previously. ;)

be careful what you wish for

at the moment in this thread it is pushing investment services, and flowers at me......

I get a lot of lingerie ads that are borderline porn, and unclear who/what they are targeting

What would it take to just get rid of the ads entirely? How much $/member?

It’s become really overwhelming with the ads and greatly detracts from readability and understanding. Sometimes the ads show electronic parts that I think are part of the thread, but no. Makes it very disjointed to try to absorb thoughts.

JR always says more signal, less noise. Well these ads are 0dbs injections of red white and pink noise.

So - how much $/member per year?

Just suggesting we donate is useless. So I donate - still ads.

I never had a mobile phone ,not to mind a so called (soul jacker)smart phone
I maintain a list of blocked third party sites via privacy badger , the trick is export your blocked list regularly ,and use that list to update browsers across the OS's /computers you use , once you build a 'block list' for your usual sites in your jurisdiction its tighter than the proverbial crabs arse ,also allows sites load much faster ,that annoying side bar listing hoax sites allowed pinnochio nose your bung hole dissappears too ,  ;D

EFF ,like CERN  probably are compromised by all the best intel services on the planet at this stage ,but its a hell of a lot better than allowing hundreds or potentially thousands of hooked nose third party entities sniff your packets on a daily basis
