Hello to all who care about inexpensive mics—
I picked up an ADK A-51 for a song. It's the basic version with no pad or pattern switching, internal hi-pass switch, transformer output. The mic sounds decent with a fairly quiet source, but distorts at moderately high SPL (e.g. a 1x12 guitar amp at reasonable recoding volume—well within the expected range for this mic). I can get more specific about the nature and point of distortion if it'll help.
Is this a sure sign that the capsule is shot?
If not, then might there be an obvious starting point in diagnosing the circuit? The boards are through-hole, and I'm a pretty confident solder-hacker, so I'm willing to give it a go if I know where to start.
If it's not worth fixing, I'd be interested in how best to salvage what I have. The mic has a really nice body, and I'd love to have a working mic in it.
Thanks for your time!
