I probably did - chances are that I handed to over to the owner of the BX20, who certainly lost it quite quickly. At least I haven't seen the part the latest 10 years..

Ah...  ;D

Eventually i'll get time to pull mine out and examine the dead coil - but it won't be for several months, or possibly the end of the year...

Hey guy's
I have a bad coil in my BX20 , Dan Kennedy (Great River Electronics) has suggested I have the coil cloned, he has worked on mine. This will destroy it, the channel is too noisy to use any way. It will cost about $600-800 for this. Doing this will give us all coils again hopefully.
I'm trying to find people that would be interested in buying some coils to offset this cost. This would be a big expense for me, as much as I paid for my BX20. I don't know what the price would be per coil, just fishing for interest before I pull any triggers.
Thanks

Hey Jeremy, sounds like we're on the same page!

Cloning the coil is what I've been thinking about.... There seems to be some inherent weakness in the original coils (perhaps an inevitable one due to the extremely thin wire) - which has resulted in many units out there with one or more dead coils. I think if we could make new coils again it would bring quite a few units back from the dead.  :)

Ideally, I was thinking this would be a great thing to do "open source" - i.e. publish the winding specs, dimensions, materials etc (CJ style) so that anyone in the world with the skills can make their own, or have them made by a professional winder, in the future.

I was planning on taking mine apart and measuring inductance, resistance, core AL etc but realistically this might not even happen this year for me as I have a very busy year.

What's the next step in your plan? Do you have any contacts for someone who can measure and dissect the original coil? Or is this something you or Dan are planning to do?

I'm down for whatever, "open" or "closed" source - I need a coil, and I know of 2 other units who's owners would probably be interested in a coil or two also...

Basically, i'm on the team!  ;D

Dan knows some guys that do winding professionally, there so tiny it would be extremely hard to do your self. It's hard enough just to get them in & out. If I have these guys do this, it would be easy & relatively inexpensive for them to make a bunch.
I could ship them, they don't weigh much.

People should get some even if they don't have a bad coil, just to have some spares.

Just need to find a bunch of people with bx20's who would want some coils.

Later,

Sounds like a good very plan Jeremy.

I'm aware the winding would be very difficult to do without experience and the right tools - more than happy to pay for someone to do the hard work for us.

Put me down for a couple. Or a bunch, depending on price...!

I know of two studios that have BX20s with bad coils, I can ask them if they want in.

Really appreciate you offering these!

Yes, i'm definitely in.

Today we opened our bx20e and tried to fix the broken coil. No luck. It has been broken from inside the coil. :(

So, in that case it not that probable that it has been damaged during transport, more likely some DC from the input IC of the amp? Am I correct?

Anyway, if we could make group buy of the coil i'm sure there will be quite many BX20's in need around the world...

Is there any progress in the project?

I too have some problems with a AKG Spring unit. It´s without Amp and I don´t know if its a BX20.
I left tyiing to repais it as I do not have the schematic and I´ve seen someone else was already soldering on it.
So I couldn´t know whats the original state. If you try to make some coiles I maybe will look at it again.
Shematic anyone?

Yes, it's unbelievable but AKG has the schematic in their own site!

Hey guys I'm still going to do this at some point, just been busy and broke. Not normal, busy usually means your making money.
Just thought I would give a shout out so you wouldn't think I'm a complete flake.
Jeremy

Just getting caught up on this thread.

I need 2 in order to make my BX20 happy again as well.  I do have a couple dead coils here if it would help to clone them.
