Hey I have a Mix Wizard, the 16 channel rackmountable kind. I got rid of a Mackie 1604 for this one a year and a half ago and WAY bigger difference. The EQ alone was enough to smoke the Mackie and the preamps are as good, if not better. However, I'm just wondering if anyone thinks it can be modded in the preamp section, or the EQ, or both, to make it REALLY shine? Does anyone have any A&H schematics?

I have a GL2 service manual, need to scan it though.

The GL2 is pretty much the same as the MixWizzard but does not have a HPF on the input and no direct outs.

I used the GL 2 a lot and I still like it very much. My newer GL2400 has more possibilities but a quick look inside reveals very similar inputs and eq.

Cheers,

Mike

Not trying to put a damper on this thread but modding this seems kind of like putting a band aid on a gunshot wound... you know? I spent a lot of time in the past trying to do simple mod stuff like changing caps and chips in my DBX 160Xs and my A&H Saber. Honestly, they did improve slightly, but not really worth the effort.

However, replacing the entire output stage on my Saber did actually make a big difference. However, it's back to stock now.

If you want to change something ... you can add DRV134's for the AUX outputs.

Just cut a jumper and insert the chips !

I dont know the MixWizzard in detail, but when it is built like the GL2 it is a lot of work to open it.

Carey Davies is the head designer at A/H and you should be able to get schematics or support info by e-mailing [email protected]

Carey is a good guy but if he's like most console designers he probably doesn't expect his designs would benefit much from tweaks. That said he should know better than most where any weak links might be in the audio path.

I am curious if you ever got the schematics. I have been wondering about this myself.

I went from a mackie 32-8 to an Allen and Heath MixWizard to a Mackie D8B (which I no longer have). The Allen and Heath was by far the best sounding. The mackies were just plain boring, especially the d8b. It would suck the life out of any mix. I ended up mixing in my mac instead of the d8b.

I am just starting to put a little project studio together and was considering the Mix Wizards... Mods would be cool.
