I see this word used--usually in reference to highs--and I really have no idea what it means.

Anyone have any good analogies or sound samples?

To me "spitty" is the high frequency distortion present on many Chinese condenser mics for example.

No idea what the general "consensus" is, though.
 
Noticeable unrelated high order harmonic content, or accentuating of sibilant frequencies.

so it sounds like basically, spitty is what you don't want to hear when you jangle a ring of keys.
