thought the boss was jokin when he said this green box that looked like a DIY civil war land mine was worth 500 bucks on ebay,

but no, he was not jokin, turns out there is a very good web page on the russian Big Muff pedals>

http://www.kitrae.net/music/big_muff_history2B.html

don't know if the CIA is in on this, or if they used Samsung TV's to spy on the factory so they could  sell the circuit to our fake president, could be radioactive, so we fix it fast and get it out of here,

here is the guts, bypass mode cuts out a lot of signal but the fuzz sounds smooth and creamy with extra bass,

pc board traces fall off quicker than the paint so the new input jack needed a jumper,

transistors unmarked, could be Chineese  germanium surplus garnered during the cold war by the mongol hoards,

i'm out.

Hi CJ,
I've worked in a lot of Green Russian Big Muffs over the years.
These pedals sound lovely but at least they need to be converted to true bypass since when you turn it off it sucks the tone dramatically.

The original DPDT Russian switch is big, cool and part of the look, please don't replace it like some people do. Use the "Millenium Bypass circuit" to have true bypass with the original switch

Other Mods/improvements I've done to this pedal:

- This pedal in stock form has the output jack on the right and the input jack on the left,  I change that so it makes sense with modern pedal routing, Input jack on the right and Output jack on the left

- I add a DC jack plug so a 9V adapter can be connected directly

- Replace the cheap 9v battery snap for a better quality hard plastic one

- replace the Sustain Pot for an Audio Taper/Log type. With the Linear stock pot, the gain increases in the first 1/3 of pot rotation and almost nothing happens in the last 2/3 of rotation.  Using a Log Pot it's easier to set the sustain knob for the required drive.

CJ, are your transistors really unmarked or do they have White or Green painted dots?

I've built a couple of Russian Green Muff Clones over the years, and although I used the same schematic with the same values for the components, I was never able to make my clones sound like my original unit. I dont know why and I never discovered it.
The difference is mainly in the Mid Range, My original unit as more Midrange and it's more open, and the Green Russian Clones always sound Mid Scooped. One day with time I have to discover whats going on.

Regards

it has the painted dots (see pics) good to hear they suck tone in bypass as we thought there was a problem with the switch,

The Painted Dots are the Russian way of marking transistor types and models.
The dotted transistors in the Big Muff Green are Silicon Russian transistors.

See attached photo

As for the Bypass, yes they were not wired for true bypass and stock they suck drastically the tone, Drop in volume and High end loss, it gets better if you have a buffer in the chain but it's always bad.
The original big russian military switch is sturdy enough, at least I never seen any fail, I always install a small perf board PCB with the millenium bypass in the switch and make it true bypass.

Also if the original switch failed and you want to keep the pedal with the original look, I have those Russian Military Switches as spare parts, I bought them on ebay from Bulgaria. I can send you one in case it's needed.

Well, bloody hell, I have one (as well as their Small Stone) and they've been sitting in a box for years, and I could use the cash!

Yeah I've got those looking NOS in the boxes, only done studio duty.  Tempting to sell at those prices.

You can find the black ones pretty cheap, especially if you find a broken one.

I bought one with some cold solder joints for $60 a year ago!

Maybe sell the green and buy a black for the studio?

Depending on the condition I've seen the Green Russian Big Muff being sold on Ebay between 80 to 250 euros max, not more than that.

Buy it now prices don't mean anything, you have to check the completed listings and then see the final prices of the ones that were actually sold

^This^

I can put a can of beans on ebay for $500 buy it now but they are still only worth $0.79

Yes, transistors in BMP are КТ3102Е(M)(datasheet Hfe 400-1000) marked with green and white spots.
BTW I've purchased some for my webstore along with some other parts for BMP cloners. Really rare nowdays even in Russia.
For those who wants some mojo :)

In early mods there were КТ3102Е (nikel), well, all this info is in the link above.

I didn't know the trasistors were КТ3102Е(M).

I checked in your webstore but couldnt find them there.

attached is the info I have on the КТ3102
