Eventually I gave up and used it for parts, all the tiny SMD parts made it too hard for me to deal with.

Did you try to contact Black Lion Audio support?
I would say that every PCB with SMD components is not DIY friendly

Hello, I'm glad to hear that I'm not crazy and that the B173 doesn't behave as it should (saturation between 44 and 52)
quick question, how do you measure preamp clipping?
