What's the consensus on the VSM1 tube mic fromCAD I replaced the 12AX7 with a 5751 and lowered the resistor values around the tube which improved the sound quite a bit.

Never used it, its an ugly lill' bastard though eh?

I am a bit curious to see what people think. My experience with CAD mics hasn't been too bad... though I have really only used the M179 and it was some time ago. I remember thinking at the time that it was certainly not thrilling, but useable.

Isn't the CAD's electrect type mics? The ones that I have tried certainly sounded that way - grained or AKG-solidtube'ish in lack of a better description..?

I have not heard one but I noted in a review it uses a OPA2107.

Maybe a the pull down resistor in the IC output stages mod could be fun.

Is it using the tube as a "standard tube microphone" voltage gain stage or is it using it as a charge amp like the M147, M149 or even the MXLV69? Just to say it has a tube?

So far out of the tube transformerless stuff I like the Rode circuit in the NTK and K2 with some part changes. Even in the Rodes I think a fet would be better than most tubes, problem would be finding a fet that would work right.

This mic is externally biased with tube gain stage and opamp buffer (Burr Brown) It actually looks good in the booth, clients like it. Not really colored, quite real sounding, big, warm not bassy but extended low end comes to mind. Also very quiet. Not cheap sounding like the Chinese counterfeit stuff. Picked it up about 5 years ago for $800.
