The two identical portables on top of the big machine.

They have a Tascam look to them; successor to the HD-P2?

Do you know when the photo was taken? I remember a Sony DAT that looked like that. Top loading. If it’s more recent maybe a Sound Devices unit?

Yeah, they probably are DATs, I think the machine they are sitting on is a DA88; so the digital tape era, before solid state recorders.

I used the DA-88's back in the day ,solid machine
they didnt put up the clock hours the MTR-90 did though ,
Teac ,maybe the lower machine ,

No, rec level knob/s different, and different number of XLR jacks on side; RCAs grouped differently.
Looks closer to the DA-P1, but not that either.

My first mastering setup was two Tascam D15 DAT machines, an HHB DAT ID to CD ID box to Marantz CD recorder.

The Fostex could sync to each other so you could do video style editing from one deck to the other.

Does not compute to stack DAT's like that, would eject-on-top

Could it be HHB's MD disk recorder in same chassis - theMDP500?

Well, as you can see, nothing's connected to the bottom one, so not in use at the time.

The photo is of Marc Aubort - seriously doubt he ever fooled around with MD, plus the arrangement of jacks on the right side is different.
