A friend/client seems to have bought a Mytek Private Q system for his studio.  His version uses Cannon DL connectors (60 pin) and he needs some snakes assembled.  Unlike EDAC/Elco multipins, it appears that Cannon doesn't offer solder (non-crimp) pins.

I've never had to terminate to DL connectors, and hence never got a crimp tool.  New tools run upwards to $500!  However, I find tools marked as "CCT-DL" on Ebay, etc. for a fraction of that price.  Are these the correct tools, or for a different series?  Google searches have left me baffled.

Thanks!

Bri

Yup that's what they cost and my experience is with crimp tools you use the best or pay the price later. The pins ain't cheap either! There is nothing low budget about this system all the components are expensive. Try renting the tool. You also must get at least two extraction tools as they break easily and cost like $60.00. Also my experience we  have crimped and soldered these pins if the connectors are going to be hooked up and disconnected often.

Thanks, Pip!  FWIW, for years I've tinned, then crimped,  then "solder heated" the EDAC/Elco pins....100% no problems.  But, I've been using a decent Paladin EDAC crimper as well.

For a small-ish one-off DL project, I can't justify the price of a new high end crimper.  I'm not building a new cable system for an old SSL desk...LOL!

I am still curious if the "CCT-DL" crimpers I've found online are actually a correct tool.

Searching for CCT-DL on Ebay gave me this  http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CCT-DL-ITT-CANNON-7103C-3-/111423932736?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19f1624940 which is identical to the crimper I use. However, others listed all seem to have a nylon locater block for the pin (the white block on the back) if the tools are very old this block wears and the pin isnt held very well and bad crimps occur.
There are versions that have a metal locater, if you can find one of those that is the best option.

I recently bought a DL crimper on ebay for about £40 UK which came from the US.  It is exactly the same as the one Walrus has linked to in the previous post.  When it turned up it was brand new.  The pin extractor is quite expensive, but most people fashion a paper clip to do the job ;)  The pins are polarised & won't go in the housing either way round like edacs.

The DL back shells are not very good, but I have used EDAC back shells before which for the particular DL size I was terminating fitted.  They just needed the hole that the securing lever goes through drilling out to fit.

They are good connectors but ridiculously expensive.

+1 on fashioning an extractor tool. The part that breaks is spring steel or should be.... A small bobby-pin/hair pin may work well as  metal stock to make a depinner

Hi Brian,
If you have a studio with a SSL console near you they have a DL crimp tool, it was delivered with each console.
And yes, to remove the pins best way is a large size paper clip.
There is this ex-SSL employee in UK, Jim Lassen, who is a specialist of wiring equipment for SSL... and DL's ... :)

He probably can help you.
Best,
