I am thinking of building a tube mic using just a cathode follower and a low ratio Xfmr. The idea being that the CF would be the cleanest circuit but would it then sound more like an FET? Your thoughts?
Here's a second question: is there a difference in 'tone' between a triode wired pentode and a real triode? For this project, I'm thinking of 6205 pentode vs 5703 triode. Is there a difference or are we splitting hairs?

The best results Ive got from a cathode follower tube mic was the B&K type design ,
no need for a transformer , a CF will happily drive 15 feet of cable , unbalanced into a hi-z input (1M) ,
Instead of spending money on a costly mumetal interstage transformer to step down ,couple directly to the grid of a following preamp. Spend the money on a line level output transformer .

use an IC follower like the one you can find at this site.
It is often a mistake to use a low ratio transformer unless you use a tube that will work correctly.
