Ceramic vs. Polystyrene caps?

I am curious if ceramic caps in the audio path could be replaced by polystyrene or film caps and if so, would that possibly open up the sound?

Polystyrene is an excellent dielectric but there are some OK ceramics too, and it really depends on how and where the cap is used.

I don't know what "opening up" could possibly mean, so I'm inclined to answer no. If the circuit is using lousy ceramic caps (check the type), in an audible frequency filter, there could be audible artifacts.

You can always do one and listen to it.
