could this be used to rack up as a mic pre?

Yes you could, but it's too big for a normal rack. You'd have to make a special case for it. Or you could get adventurous and remove the buss assignment section. All in all, probably not worth the effort. Especially when you look at the price of the Toft gear. Which is probably comparable to this, sonically. The Trident A-range is where it's at.

WOW!!! TOFT? Their gear is cheap! and looks so beaultifull... has anyone used this???

Look at the price:

The first product from Toft Audio Designs is the ATC-2 dual channel F.E.T compressor,
four band equalizer and mic pre-amplifier.

List Price | $1299.99 US | £799.99 UK | ?1,195.99 EU |

$1299 for two FET compressors, two EQs and two MIC PREAMPS?

And this is the list price. Probably you can get cheaper on the streets.

That´s what I call cheap.

So does it sounds like it looks. As I understand, the mic inputs are transformer balanced...???

Well, I've read that the preamps are good but not amazing. The EQ is functional but doesn't get any awards. The compressor is the nice part. This is from various reviews. Maybe gear snobs don't want to rave about something this price. I've wanted to try one myself but there's no one around here that sells them.

Tech specs of the EC1 channel for those interested

Preamp: Burr Brown 1NA217
Other opamps: TL072
Compressor: FET
EQ: Wien Bridge Topology - clone of MTS980 mixer

Fletcher at Mercenary audio has an amusing / ??informative review of this box here

http://www.mercenary.com/flatre.html

He seemed to say that the EQ was great, the compressors good, and the pres not bad...

oh and if you get bored there is quite a rant about that review on the link posted at the bottom of the page

Good stuff about the start of Trident, Barry Porter

Good quote about dsigning gear in the 1970s and the lack of any decent test equipment

Well, post a link.

That Trident dual compressor looks so great!

If you mean it's looks, then, yes, I like the dice-style 5-layout as well.
Or did you mean my Chinese table ?

If you meant it soundwise, to put things into perspective:
From what I've read people describe them as nice & certainly OK, but that they don't touch a 1176. I haven't finished my G1176 yet so can't compare.

Bye,

Peter

I had it only for a week and made many tests. It is a good device, and a very good value for the money but don't expect anything spectacular.
It sounds ok.

Yes, it should have about the complete stuff of the old place.

Any more impressions about this unit?
As this moment not from me, it's at the bench again for more updates.
I didn't put all suggestions of back then into it right away and then came other stuff along and - you know how it goes. So now it's out of the rack again, will continue with it.
